My PC freezes when starting up or playing games

This started a few days ago, when I start my PC it has a chance of freezing on the wavy flag if it does I have to leave it for about an hour and try again otherwise, if I keep trying it will keep freezing. So when I can get on I am able to do anything but, when I start playing games or opening up lots of programs it will freeze again. Seems to be when I try to put a bit of stress on the computer it just gives up, I checked the temps of the CPU, GPU and MOBO but they all come back at a normal temp, and the usage of the CPU and GPU are only at 1-3 degrees Celsius when idle so its not like a program is effecting it. Thanks, Kieran

    What antivirus are you using?

Also download ccleaner, run the file cleaner then run the registry cleaner multiple times till it finds no errors.

I'm using Avast, I just thought it was a coincidence but I did get a virus on the day when it happened, I got rid of it 5 mins after I got it. I then just started using it as normal I had restarted multiple times and did not freeze at all, till about 4 hours after i removed the virus. But I will try the ccleaner.
  3. Get rid of avast it is a system hog and can cause these sorts of problems, grab commodo or avg instead.

I've done ccleaner and got AVG and I'm doing a Anti-Rootkit scan, I'm at 27% and it has found 1 threat, what is a Rootkit?
  5. rootkits run outside of your operating system and can give people access to your system.
