lost 2 sockets of memory

I noticed that my memory had gone down by half .
I found that the last 2 sockets are not working is this a cpu or motherboard problem

was working ok then noticed problem carnt test the firs slot as cooler in the way but both sticks of memory run in the second slot

I thought it maybe the processor as I was led to beleave the memory controller was in the processor

It is, but if only two slots work then its likely a fault with the motherboard. The chances of getting a slightly defective processor are very very very slim, in fact I have never heard/encountered/seen/etc anyone get one.

no I have not over clocked memory or cpu I took my am3 cooler off and fitted stock cooler
Then I tried the first slot that one works so I have lost 1 slot off each channel.
i'm confused I aint had any luck with asus mother boards

Hmm, that sucks. Ah well, these things happen sometimes. Send it back assuming its under warranty.
