Uses - Eventual triple monitor 1080p setup
Blu Ray viewing
Light video editing
Heavy gaming

First home build, last comp was a laptop so I have to buy everything. Anything need an upgrade? Any possible downgrades? Any glaring bottlenecks/problems?

My budget is maxed at 2000. I'm ok with making cuts or shifting the cost around, but I can't go any higher. I will be trying to do at least moderate overclocking of the cpu and gpu. I plan to keep the system as is for at least 3 years.

Thanks for taking a look!

Solution
If you want 3 monitors at 1080p then you need a i7. A 8350 will heavily bottleneck the system. Also, you'll need 2xGPUs. A moderate CPU overclock is a $30 Cooler Master Evo, not a $110 H100i. You'd save $80 and put that towards the i7.

My recommendation would be to get a i7, non K model, in order to save some $$. Also, you only need a $140 mobo that supports 2xGPUs.

I'd prefer an intel really, but it's fairly pricey. The mobo and cpu just cost so much more than amd. I chose the h100i to leave myself some room to push the processor if I ran into any issues - such as the bottlenecking on triple monitors you mentioned. I'll be getting the monitors as a hand me down in a few months, and then using this single monitor on another system for my girlfriend (she chose this monitor). If I oc'd the amd more would it be worth it to stick with the amd, or am I totally kidding myself? SLI 780's would be possible for me in the future, after Xmas when I'd be getting the 3 monitor setup.

So looks like I'll definitely have to grab a 850w psu. Am I right in hearing you say there isn't a way to get the 8350 to work well in triple monitor setup, even with a stronger oc? I'm not scared to oc, I've just not had too much experience with it, so I wanted to give myself some time to see if I need/want to push it. I plan to do some either way.

I'm not opposed to intel at all - I chose amd to keep the price down, nothing more.

Edit: Meaning, yes, I'd love to see an intel build. Not sure if that come through over the internet lol

8350 will not work well with 3 monitors. I'm trying to find the report that I saw which essentially showed that anything less than a i7 will bottleneck your system if you want 3 monitors. I'm saying that even a 3570k will bottleneck a 3 monitor system.

If you do get 3 monitors then go for 3x 2ms Asus 24" monitors (60Hz). Trying to run 3x 144Hz monitors is a challenge.

If you don't believe me about needing a i7 then search for websites that test systems. I'll post the link once I find it.

Ok, I'll do some legwork on that then - that's enough information to get me going for sure. The 144hz was for my gf's eventual rig, she HATES motion blurring and gets headaches from low fps. She turns down all the settings just to have super high frames. I can't remember the monitors I'm getting exactly, but they're all 60hz.

I was curious about a couple of other decisions you made in the build, however.

The Case - Hadn't seen this before. Is it comparable to the case I'd selected before? It looks pretty cool, and has the same features it seems. Probably a better value. In general I was looking for a case with some decent stock fans, and one that would make my first build fairly painless. The Corsair seemed to fit the bill, this one does also from first looking at it.

Cooler - I see this being recommended almost ubiquitously as an air cooler. How real is the distance between this and closed loop liquid? I think I'd originally settled on the h100i because I was looking at haswells which I'd heard ran really hot, but then I switched to amd to pack all the parts in that I wanted. I'm gathering you think I'd be fine on air with a haswell, just curious what kind of point there would be in someone grabbing the h100i.

Can I still oc the non-"k" processor? I want to do it eventually, and would probably play with it a bit when I first set up the system. It looks kind of fun. If there's still some room to oc moderately I think I'd be happy, but like I said, I don't know very much about ocing, but it's nothing google doesn't fix, for my need anyway. What does the K branding give you in terms of oc that a "non-k" doesn't? I'm also certain I'll tinker with ocing the 780, since that's what makes that card worth buying - but msi afterburner looks super easy to use, and there's plenty of googles for that.

How is this looking compared to what I had before? I think I'm a bit more satisfied with it, and it comes in at the same price point when using the parts from your build envy. What do you think of this for triple monitor? I'm concerned about oc mileage with air on haswell, but I might not like to oc too far, and I can always drop a h100i or its next iteration into the case later on if I need the power. I think this build looks pretty solid. Thoughts?

Just figured out how to generate text...lol

Case: NZXT Phantom 410 has great fans and cooling. I'd take it and put money elsewhere.

Cooler: The H100i is a great cooler but the goal is to play at 3 monitors. Instead of a H100i you could get a $50 cooler plus a i7-k model. Good enough. I'd get the Noctua NH-D14..incredible cooler and on par with the H100i (actually the Noctua is quieter too).

K vs non-K: You can't overclock a non K Intel cpu. If you are hesitant then get the i7-xxxxk model. Better suited for 3 monitors.
