Hoping to upgrade my dual core to either a quad or six-core cpu. I already know I'm going to get an after market fan/heatsink and use Arctic Silver with it.

The one I have my eye on is the COOLER MASTER GeminII S524
With it's copper base I'm sure it'll be able to keep a quad core fairly cool. But what about a 6-core?

These are the 3 processors on my list:
AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core
AMD FX-6100 Zambezi 3.3GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 95W Six-Core

I'd also like to know if this thing will fit over my RAM modules as well as in my case:

Case: Sunbeam Transformer (8 inch wide, 20 inch tall, 20 inch long with 11 inch from 3.5 bays to back of case)
MB: ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS (AM3+, AMD 760G)
RAM: x2 G.Skill Ripjaw Series X DDR3 PC3-10700 (667 MHz) F3-10666CL9-4GBXL (8GB Total)

If this heatsink/fan isn't compatible with my case and/or RAM or won't cool 4 to 6 core CPUs well, do you have any suggestions?

My budget is about $75 max for a heatsink.

dont get phenom ll 970 or 6100
as they are outdated cpu

buy a 6300 it would be best as it has new piledriver architecture
pileriver structure is 35-40% better than phenom and 15-20% better than bulldozer(6100)

for the heatsink i would advice u a cooler master seideon 120m for 24$ \\

it is a liquid cooler so no problem with rams

Thank you! Adding it to the list. Waiting to see what other users have to say/suggest before I make a final decision though.

That seems to be the case with the motherboard I have. It only has 2 DIMM slots anyway
