USB ports don't connect with WD USB drives

Short and sweet: I have 2 WD USB drives, neither of which show up when connected to the rear USB ports on my Dell Inspiron 570, but will connect through the front USB ports. I am running Windows 7 Pro

I'd like to keep the front 2 ports available for thumb drives.

Thanks for any responses.

OK, hope I haven't totally wasted anyone's time: Seems that the USB extension cord I tried to use doesn't make a connection. When I connect the drives directly to the rear port, everything works fine. Sorry, and thanks.
