Games running DirectX randomly freeze

Hello, I'm encountering a problem with my PC.

Whenever I play games using DirectX, they will run fine for a while, until they will freeze at random points. I will still be able to hear background sound from the game, but the video will freeze. The game comes back after 1-2 minutes, and I will be able to play again, until the problem occurs again (usually about 5 minutes later).

I have used Memtest to test my memory and no problems were found. Prime95 was causing my CPU (AMD Phenom II x4 955) to hit 80 degrees Celsius so I decided to cancel the program in fear of it damaging my processor.

I also used Furmark to try and test my GPU, but it was hitting over 80 degrees Celsius also.

My graphics card is a Sapphire AMD Radeon 6870 1Gb, with latest drivers installed.

Other games like Counter Strike: Source, Garry's Mod, Football Manager 2013 do not crash at all.

How can I fix this issue?

Solution
Well it could be a heating issue. Running games will make your CPU and GPU heat up past 80 degrees just like those benchmarks. Usually they full out crash when they overheat, but I have seen them do stuff like make the monitor flicker before crashing.

Try cleaning out the system really well, and then getting some good thermal paste, cleaning the processors off, and putting the better paste on. Maybe consider adding a case fan and a better cooler on your CPU. If it is overheating then this will fix it. If it is not heating causing the problem, you really won't be hurting much by doing this because it really needs done anyways. Running at those temps the hardware won't last nearly as long as it would if you cool it down a bit.

My monitor has produced a garbled image sometimes, forcing me to hard reset my computer. So you think I should try and keep my PC cooler? It has only just started to encounter problems whilst gaming in the summer, so overheating is a likely issue.

Yea if it only started since it got warmer outside it really looks like heating issue to me. Like I said, try some quality thermal paste, a better CPU cooler maybe, and I would say definitely a case fan or two, since two cards hitting 80 degrees will quickly build up heat in the case.

Ok, thanks for your advice.
