What kind of thermal paste should I get?

First I want to thank anyone for taking the time to try and help me, it is greatly appreciated.

Okay, so for a while now my PC has been shutting down on me when I play certain games, and just the other day I think I FINALLY figured out why it's doing it. A while back I opened up my PC, took it apart, and cleaned it. I put it back together and it was running a lot better. (it was pretty dusty) But anyways, I had taken off my CPUs heat sink to clean it, but I didn't apply new thermal paste when I put it back on.

I'm 90% sure that this is the problem. I put the heat sink on correctly, not too tight, and I tightened it like you would for a tire on a car. It's on there, and snug. So it's not anything like it not sitting on the CPU correctly.
If you DO think I'm overlooking something, don't hesitate to tell me, I'm no genius and I'm definitely not the best with computers.

My question is, what kind of thermal paste should I use? I asked my dad and he said to go to auto zone and get some for $1 instead of paying way more at radio shack. I think he's being a jackass. Thermal paste is thermal paste but it can't all be the same like that. *eye roll*

I obviously want to get the cheapest stuff I can, but I don't want to buy shit paste either. Suggestions?

I took the fan off the heatsink and the heatsink off the cpu, and cleaned all the dust out. I didn't clean off the old thermal paste and didn't apply new (I don't have any thermal paste). And I know my dad isn't a jackass, lol. I was talking to him about it right before I posted it here and he just got me all frustrated. One of those "you had to be there" kind of situations.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply btw. I really appreciate it.

I found out why my computer has been shutting down. The whole thermal paste thing is still an issue, just not why my computer was shutting down.

The fan on my graphics card died.

I found a short term solution. I just took a fan out of my old PC and put it in my current PC. Put it on the side panel aimed right at the graphics card. My temp went from 61°C to a steady 41°C. And when I played a game that would normally cause a shutdown after 5-10 minutes, my temp was holding at 51°C and I played it for about 2 hours straight with zero issues.

But long term...I need a new graphics card. Lol.
