Hey guys, I have a problem.
I bought a new graphics card (GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7870 OC GHZ Edition) like a month ago and it worked like a charm... until now.
I shut down my pc normally yesterday, but when I wanted to boot it today, the screen just stayed black. After closer inspection, the GPU fans just shake a little and move for like half a second when I boot... then nothing. CPU Fan etc just normally starts, but because I don't have a buzzer in my cheap chassis, I don't know whether or what beep sounds are being produced.

Before, I had a Radeon 5750, which used just 1 6-pin power connector, the new one uses 2 6-Pin connectors. I use the Thermaltake Smart M650W Bronze which has an additional slot for another 6 pin pci-e cable, but because I left all my additional cables at my parents place, I had to buy a new one and connect the graphics card with 2 seperate cables. So after I checked out all the other components, I switched back in my old graphics card and the computer boots without problems and runs smoothly.

So the question now is:
Is my new graphics card broken? I had no pc crash, no errors, nothing before. Games etc was running smooth without any signs of problems.
I just shut it down at night and it didnt work in the morning anymore... or is it maybe my Power Unit?
The thing that weirds me out is, that the GPU fans are not completely dead, but like I said, they shake a little when i hit the power button, so it kinda looks like that it doesnt get enough power?

My Specs:

New:
GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7870 OC GHZ Edition
Old:
Sapp1GB D5 X HD5770
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3400 AM
MSI 770-C45 Mainboard
Corsair DIMM 8 GB DDR3-1333

I think you are really at the point where you need to get that card tested. If you bought it at a local store I would take there for some quick testing. any shop might also do a quick check for free for you. they usually have test systems already setup and will do quick checks for cheap or free.

Well, it does work with the old GPU, but I wasnt sure if it's because the new one is broken, or if the power supply just can't handle the new one anymore..

Sadly I don't have any other pc where I could try out the card

Yeah i think thats the one, here the exact one, got 650W (german site) http://www.alternate.de/Thermaltake/Thermaltake+Smart_M650W_Bronze,_Netzteil/html/product/914448/?

Although I didnt use the PCI-E power cable that was delivered with the unit, but bought one at a local pc store... but that really shouldnt be the problem I guess? Or are there differences between cables?

And any reason why the card could be dead? Just bad luck? I already have some bad experiences with power supplys, so I am quick to blame them for any problems ;)

yap, tried the old gpu with the cable coming directly from the Power supply, and with the one in the extra slot. Works with each.

The thing is, that the card worked for ~1 month without any problems, then suddenly this. So it seems its just a short circuit or something in the card? The twitch of the fans is the one thing, that really weirds me out. Seems that at least something is happening for a moment

Yeah I guess that sounds reasonable. I ordered the card over the web, but we got a pretty good pc store here. I will take it there tomorrow, if it doesnt work there, its a case for warranty (and if it does work, I really have no clue anymore ;) )
