I need some opinion on which is a better choice for me. I'm currently running a Phenom 955 @ 4.0ghz paired with a GTX 670 FTW. This PC started as a budget build with the intention of switching to Intel in the future. It has served me well for the past year running all current games like BF3 with ease (1080p). A Haswell upgrade will cost $600 and $700 for the GTX 780. I know I'll get more performance with the 670 if I go Haswell. Or is it worth the extra bucks for the 780 and stick with the Phenom and still get a slight performance increase.

More about : upgrade gtx 780 haswell

if you plan on oc'ing, I would look at getting a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge set-up, Haswells are not good overclockers IMHO.

they don't have to be as good OCing because they are clock-for-clock more efficient.

BTW 670 is a great card - I would go for the cpu

This may be so, but it does not always result in better overall performance when overclocking.

Go with a new CPU, that processor will bottleneck a 780.

What about the z87 features over the z77? Any big advantages? I also considered Sandy Bridge for its overclocking, but I can only find 3930ks which is out of my price range. I want this purchase to be beneficial and future proof because both i5s are the same price at $219.99.

z87 just slightly newer and improved I guess you could say. I'd just go for haswell. Right now on newegg you can get one for the cost of an Ivy bridge. As for overclocking, they don't overclock quite as well, but keep in mind the don't need to as much due to the 10% performance increase.

If you have AM3+ board you could get yourself a fx-8350/8320 which competes with the i5. Also would not bottleneck 780.
