Do I have to Install a new os after hard drive upgrade?

I have a asus x401a and Im going to be upgrading the hard drive to a new 500gb drive. After installing it do I have to reinstall my OS because I really dont want to fork out an extra 100 just for a new OS.

  1. your OS lives on the hard drive. If you replace the hard drive, there goes your OS

    Asus has recovery discs you can make, right? Make them. Install new drive, go into bios and tell it to run the recovery program.

    That is probably close enough to get you going, but may not be exactly right. It seems familiar enough to the procedure I followed when backing up my asus laptop
