Hello, I am thinking about connecting an external GPU to my Dell Inspiron N5050 notebook. I do not have an express slot on the side of my laptop, but I do have a HDMI port. Can I use this instead to connect the two? I do not have a specific GPU in mind. It is just a general question.

There is no such thing as a proper external GPU. Silverstone (I think its them at least..) has an enclosure in the works with its own cooling and power supply that takes any GPU and runs the signal into a computer through a thunderbolt port, but that is not yet released I believe.

Asus and MSI also had 1 each but they were only reased on specific markets and didn't do so well, they were also extremely overpriced.

Vidock is the only commercial egpu that was even remotely popular but costing $280 for the 2x6pin version isn't a good deal at all. Diy is a lot cheaper but it still costs too much to be feasible, the adapter is $90-130 plus you'll need a psu. And either solution still needs a gpu.

Egpus will use expresscard, mpcie or thunderbolt. You have mpcie but it's under your keyboard which makes for a terrible setup. Sell your laptop and you'd get a better laptop then the cost of your current laptop+egpu.
