Have I installed my SSD correctly?

Hey everyone,

Just recently installed a new ssd (sandisk ultra plus 256gb) in my system (Dell XPS 420 on Sata II) with a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit, and i have noticed a marked improvement in performance, however i'm just trying to make sure i am getting the performance i am supposed to after reading several articles.

When i test in AS SSD Benchmark i get an overall benchmark score of around 251 (early 200ish m/s read and 200ish m/s write) it also shows 'pciide BAD' in the software even though i have done the necessary registry changes to enable ahci mode after Windows installation and as far as i can see there is no option to enable it in my BIOS, the only option i see is that is close is 'RAID Autodetect / ATA' or 'RAID on' which is currently set to autodetect.

Is there anything i can do or need to do to further improve performance? Should i install the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver? or is that the best i'm going to get on my system?

Reading this, I think you can do better than 251.

You absolutely should enable AHCI, which I don't think you did in the registry, otherwise your windows should blue screening during boot. Apparently you can enable AHCI by choosing RAID on your bios, but first you need to do the registry settings properly then reboot and change bios.

Thanks for the reply.

I am pretty sure i have done the correct changes to the registry, i have checked it several times before but i will check again when i get home.

When i have gone into my Dell BIOS and turned RAID on and rebooted (after doing the changes to the registry), it shows a black screen with a list of my drives and the words 'Non-RAID disk' next to them, changing back to autodetect then allows me to boot into Windows just fine.

If there is no other solution would performing a fresh install of Windows after setting RAID to 'on' solve all problems?
