GTX 670 drivers not loading properly

I've reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium. I can set the resolution to my monitor's native, but when I get to installing the nvidia graphics drivers (latest 326 beta), it reboots and gives me a blank, black screen. Funny thing is though, it continues to load and plays a tone, so my computer is not "crashed," but I can't see anything once the drivers are installed.

I rebooted in safe mode and clean-installed nvidia 320 WHQL drivers, but it's still not working. Blank screen for the login. I'm afraid it's a hardware problem. Before reinstalling Windows, I was able to play all games.

Please help!

I have a Dell XPS 420 (Q6600 3.0 GHz), 4 GB RAM. Mobo BIOS is latest A07 revision. Dell 2408WFP monitor connected via DisplayPort. Connecting to DVI did not help. 450 W PSU.

Solution
having looked at your specs again im thinking its your psu, even the nvidia site reccomends 500 watt as minimum, with the driver being installed im thinking the psu is going out of low power use with the windows basic driver and the psu cannot handle it.

i would recommend getting at least a 550-600 watt psu

see if you can get one from a local computer shop so its easier to take back if its not the psu.

Instead of always posting the same thing can you actually tell the OP (or me) why the problem occurs? What's the point in posting a generic solution if you don't know the underlying cause of the problem?

i couldnt tell you why the drivers corrupt because the reasons are too numerous and ofcourse i dont know specifically why they did in this case either, but 9 out of 10 times cleaning the corrupted driver works.

that and its quick and simple to do.

What I did was format and reinstall Windows again, letting Windows Update get everything it needs, including Nvidia's 311 driver (rebooting many times in the process). Once I enabled an Aero theme and rebooted, it came up with the same black screen instead of login. I don't know how drivers could be a problem.

I even reinserted the graphics card and double-checked the power connectors to make sure they were secure.

Then I tried restoring from a system image (before I enabled Aero) and it still comes up with a blank screen. It's a good thing I like computers because I spent all day on mine. Is my fancy 3D hardware shot?

I've wondered that too. But this card has given me nearly a year of trouble-free gaming in this system. The UPS I use gives a readout of 250-300 W max under load for the entire system, so it didn't seem close to the limit. But I guess PSU's can get old and tired.

yeah if you have had the psu for a while it could be worn now and unable to supply enought power to the pcie x6 connectors.

the power rating on the psu is also the total power, you could have pretty much been near maxing the power output of the 12v supply the entire time which will also wear it down quicker.

you should be able to see the individual power outputs of each voltage rail on the sticker on the psu.

Silverstone Tek Strider Series ATX12V/EPS12V 550W 80+ Gold PFC Power Supply with Full Modular Cables ST55F-G is for sale at $110 on Amazon. Would this be a good PSU? I notice that all new PSU's have an off rocker switch, but my existing PSU/case does not. Will this be a problem for installation?

Yes I have Win 7 64-bit, and when it's working, my 5 year-old computer runs like a champ.

I ordered a 550 W Gold-rated Rosewill CAPSTONE semi-modular PSU because it was $72 on New Egg. A great deal on a highly rated, efficient PSU.

Double checked the OEM PSU. Only 425 W. We'll see if the new PSU will fix the problem when it arrives tomorrow.
