SATA 3 Power Cable - Do I need an extension?

I just put together my first PC, and I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy an extension for a SATA3 power cable. I have 2 so far, and on my mobo I have a few open slots for SATA power (labeled SATA3, 4, 5 etc...).

Anyway, I'm hooking up a new SSD to my PC and I think I need to buy a new SATA power cable. Does that sound right? Thanks in advance.

  1. are you talking about SATA power cables or SATA data cables?

the power should come from your PSU not from the motherboard

I'm positive that it's a power cable. There are two ports, one's wider than the other. I have the wider port covered, which I believe is the data port, correct? I don't have anything to plug into the smaller port. (Samsung 840 Pro for the SSD, btw, if it's necessary.)r
