Not so much seeking advice on a hardware choice I am actually thinking of making. What I would like some discussion on and for my own knowledge base is can anyone tell me how 6 memory slots are practical give as I see it there are no combinations of modules that allow you to attain the maximum capicity of the boards I have seen that utilise a six slot setup.

Hope that made sense <laugh>

Solution
because its triple channel so its multiple of 3's you need 3 sticks of ram for a triple channel configuration so you have 6 slots for 2 triple channel banks.

I thought about the scenaio of triple channel.
So the benifit is achieved by running at lower capacity but better channel use?
ie installing say 6x4on a 32 oard and being able to run them triple allbeit sacrificing 8gb of the potential max
Would it not have made more sense to configure a four slot board to utilise three of the four slots in triple channel mode and leave the option to go say 4x8 if you wished to go with a duel setup.

you dont even need to run at lower capacity and still get the extra bandwith from triple channel.

and with the slots because of the way the slots are physically traced (wired) to the memory controller they can only be either double or triple channeled.

last post might not make sense what I am saying is say on a 32gb capacity board the max module able to be used to fully utilisethe capicity per slot is 4gb. Whch will only give you 24gb

So they have sacrificed capcity for performance

Mauler given triple channel provides better performance than duel how do you think memory will go.Logic would dictate we may soon see 3 and 5 gb sticks ( maybe there are and I just aint seen them yet )

Ah ok hadent thought of that. Makes sense though as everything ussually doubles ie bit models whether they be OS orCPU/GPU rates. For the record am just trying to apply general logic to theese matters as have not had anything but a user interest in computers for the last 30 years or so. Is undoubted I will say something that sounds stupid to those in the know but hell am old enough to take a laugh even if is at my expense :)
But as dad use to say , its better to ask and sound stupid for a bit to learn something than to keep quite and remain so forever.
