We are looking to replace our aged Dell MD1000 DAS drive with 2x Rackmount NAS. Not very familiar with either of these manufactures, if anyone can pitch in some recommendation or preferences that would be great. Thanks.

I am thinking of either

Synology is a great brand in business NAS devices with a great range in products. I have used a few of their smaller 2-bay devices for small offices and they are great devices for quality and performance. Though they are more expensive than some other similar NAS devices, a lot of it comes down to support and ease of management, which the Synology devices are a breeze to set up it seems.

That being said, comparing the two NAS units that you have linked the Qnap is slightly better it seems. The main reasons why I say this is because it includes USB 3.0 and redundant power supplies. These are some great features for backup speed and resiliency if that is something you are concerned with for protecting your data. Ideally, I'd try to...

That being said, comparing the two NAS units that you have linked the Qnap is slightly better it seems. The main reasons why I say this is because it includes USB 3.0 and redundant power supplies. These are some great features for backup speed and resiliency if that is something you are concerned with for protecting your data. Ideally, I'd try to find a Synology unit that has those features already. Unfortunately I don't see that any Synology 2U NAS units have USB 3.0 built in, but there are units with redundant power supplies. The nice thing on the Synology units as well is it supports a greater number of hard drives if storage capacity is something of a concern.

Lastly, while the WD Red drives are nice quality for basic NAS set ups, if you're looking at setting up business storage and need reliability and performance, I'd HIGHLY recommend stepping up to an enterprise-level hard drive, such as the WD SE or the WD RE4 drives for better quality, reliability, and performance in your storage.
