Hi everyone,

First of all I would like to thank everyone here for the great job they keep doing over the years and although I rarely post I often read what everyone posts and love your comparison guides... so enough of my rumbling, I have a weird one, at list weird for me.

So, recently I built a new Desktop, I am in graphic arts and in video editing plus I like gaming so my rig had to be powerful. So for the H/W list:

M/B: ASUS P8Z77 V-LX latest bios update
CPU: i5 3570K
RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) @ 1600Ghz
GPU: nVidia GTX470 (with custom cooler)
HDD: 128GB SSD Samsung 830 (latest firmware) Windows etc + 2TB Seagate
PSU: Thermaltake 850W 80% efficiency.

Problem goes like this, I recently formatted and reinstalled everything, the first signs that something was wrong came up when the installation was expanding files after reaching 2% the PC would power off... I really mean that the power led on my PC would go off... after 10sec the computer came back on and it naturally said that there was no MBR etc. That was solved by downgrading the bios to the previous version. The installation of Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 went fine and I got through the drivers installation too without and problems. The weird thing is that when I do stuff on the PC, working on Photoshop or Illustrator, or editing a video on Sony Vegas or even play a game with everything maxed out the PC works fine! If I do nothing and lets say I want to leave it on for the night to download a torrent after some time the PC will power off by it self the power led completely off, after 10sec powers on again telling me to either boot on safe mode or boot Windows normally.

My main thoughts are either the motherboard or the 4 year old PSU. I tried pulling everything out and used my electrical blower to be sure no dust was in any slot and reseated everything but it's still doing it, reflashed the latest bios from ASUS and disabled the anti-surge option still doing it, so I'm kinda frustrated cause I can't see what is wrong with it, HWmonitor and other tools even on the most heavy duty stuff show no overheating. The power off happens when the PC is not used...

I'm sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to be meticulous, any help will be really appreciated and I thank you in advance.

This is going to sound lame but did you change your power settings in windows I had to ask? Also maybe if the board and power supply unit is 4 yrs old maybe it help to trouble shoot the power supply first then the board.

Hey man, thanks for your quick reply! Yes my settings are on High Performance and it's set to never Sleep etc. But I think I found the culprit! :O If I let the PC boot in bios or boot from a Fedora CD it would never turn power off, so I figured it was software related, the only extra thing I installed was the ASUS AI Suite II... After uninstalling that the PC hasn't powered off as off yet so I guess some stupid piece of software included in the suite was causing the phenomenon... Well thanks for your concern man :D

The PC didn't shut down when in Live CD of Ubuntu, in my SSD Windows installation I found Intel Watchdog Timer installed that the ASUS AI Suite II had installed but didn't uninstall after removing the whole suite... Will test tonight and see if without this the computer will shutdown and then power on again by it self like it did before... Thanks again for your answers :)
