Complete newbie so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I'm trying to reach a wifi signal that is 3 blocks away from me. I have an amped wireless SR10000 extender/repeater. I have the Amped Wireless 12dBi Omni-Directional Wi-Fi Antenna but that didn't work. From what I've been reading I need either a yagi or cantenna but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

I could try it but it doesn't seem to have the best reviews. I should mentioned that I want attached it to the SR10000.

Sorry, I think you miss understood the SR10000 is a extender/repeater not a computer.

The largest issue you are going to have with a external antenna is the cable between the antenna and the repeater is going to lose a lot of the signal the antenna gained. The newer way to to do this is to put the electronics outside and use ethernet cable rather than antenna cable to connect the device. This eliminates the loss problem and greatly extends the distance you can go outside between your electronics and the outdoor unit.

The product I find that works well is

You could plug this into your repeater I guess but that is another connection that will lose speed so you are best off plugging it into your main router. It is only $50.

I would test by placing your current repeater outside and see if you get any signal You maybe wasting your time. If you get no signal at all its unlikely it will work. Normally to go any distance both ends of the connection need outdoor antenna not just one.

There are lots of directional antenna options but all suffer the issue of loss in the antenna cable

I thought about something like this but the reason I decided against it, the reason is that my area is very windy. No one has anything on their roofs because more then likely, it will blow off. I thought I start out with something simple first. However, if it comes to that, I could attach it to the house or maybe a tree but I would have to get permission to do so.

tp link 24 dbi high gain antenna is by far the best antenna in the world, the only problem is that it's directional witch means you should turn it untill you find the wifi you're trying to connect to,chose me as best answer if i helped !

What is the difference between tp link, air grid or any other parabolic dish? Is this better then the yagi or cantenna?

yeah it's a lot better just take a look at it picture you'll see what i'm talking about,i own it and it works like a charm,u can pick up signal even 1 mile away if there is nothing between you and the router(no walls no trees ect)

There is not a lot of difference between the antenna themselves as long as the vendor does not lie about the gain. Antenna design has not changed in many many years. Most the difference are related to things like wind load and weight. There are technical difference between things like yagi and parabolics related to side lobes and such but that tends to not be all that important to a non professional installation. Mostly what matters is the DB gain. If you were trying to avoid interference then the antenna transmission pattern means more.

The difference between the airgrid system and antenna is the airgrid is both the antenna and the electonics all in one package. Most antenna say blah blah blah xxdb gain. But this is at the connection on the back of the antenna. If you run 50ft of microwave coax to connect it you can get signficant loss. Sure you buy very expensive microwave cable and get less loss but you alway take some. The airgrid system has the "router" directly attached to the antenna and converts it to ethernet which can use cheap cable and take no loss. Not sure why but airgrid sells their system for not much more than the cost of just a antenna. This is the way many outdoor radio systems are going. Many cell towers the radio units are mounted at the top of the tower inside the antenna enclosures rather that at the bottom which is why you don't see that 3inch around low loss microwave cable going up the tower

First thank you guys for your help, like I stated in my first post, I know very little about this stuff. So basically, I should just skip the yagi/cantenna and focus on the parabolics. For the airgrid system what all would I need to connect to the amped wireless extender.

Got trees but I'm not looking for that far of a distance. My question now lies as I tried to decide what in the world I'm doing, is what all will I need to connect the tp dish to my amped wireless extender?

Okay, but what type of ethernet cable? Are there any other things I'm going to need?

Pretty much anything you can find will work. You technically should get at least cat5e but i doubt you will even find someone selling less than that. Most things you find are cat6 or better.

They do make special outdoor ethernet cable but mostly that is if you bury it, the soil can damage the plastic coating. Most the problems will be the sun damaging the jacket on the cable. It takes many years to cause a issue so I would just buy cheap cable and just assume you might need to replace it in 5 years. likely the wireless radio technology will be better by then also.

The tp link and the airgrid both seem to be good products though not as many reviews for airgrid. I decided to go with the AirGrid M2-HP 20dBi mostly for its smaller size. More costlier then the tp link but the airgrid's smaller size will go over better with the neighborhood. Besides it looks pretty easy to put together and I can see how long a cable I'm going to need once I figure its placement. Hopefully, it will work. Newbleet and you have been a great help. Thank you
