Will a AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition (am2+) work on my M57SLI-S4 (AM2) Board?

My old potato desperately needs a cpu upgrade - and i found an AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition on an online auction site. I was wondering two things, will it work on my board? and if so, will it outperform something like an Athlon x2 6000+ on the board i'm currently using? (thats what i originally was looking for, and i'm worried compatibility issues would limit the phenoms performance by to much).

Fairly urgent! Any help/insight would be appreciated!

1.Support for Socket AM3/AM2+/ AM2 processors: AMD Phenom™FX processor/ AMD Phenom™ processor/ AMD Athlon™ 64 FX processor/AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core processor/AMD Athlon™ 64 processor/AMD Sempron™ processor
(Note) If you install AMD AM3/AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherbord, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200MHz) to HT1.0(2000 MT/s) spec; however, the frequency of AM3/AM2+ CPU will not be impacted. Please refer "CPU Support List" for more information.

Thank's for replying. However, i must admit, i don't really understand what that means. Would you care to give me a brief explanation on how this will impact my computers performance?

It will work but you will have to flash the latest BIOS for support. If you are on the latest version BIOS you are good to go.
