I am trying to install Windows 8 to my new WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA III harddrive. I do not have a optical drive that will work on this system, so I am installing via USB. Windows setup, however, does not detect the hdd. I have tries different ports and cables, IDE and AHCI modes, and even my BIOS doesn't see the drive. I loaded the SATA Controller driver from the mobo disk (GIGIBYTE ga-970a-ds3) via USB with no change. I tried re-creating the bootable USB, but that's no help. It's a 2.0 USB in a 2.0 port. I can hear the HDD spool up and the arm move, but it also likes to click a lot before and after POST. Sound like the armature is getting jammed or something. There was also a squeak during the first 1/2 hour. Finally, there is sometimes a quick buzz when spooling down which sounds like the reader head touching the plate. Did I get a bunk drive?

Solution
Guess you won't know till you try another drive or put that one in another machine... and it wouldn't be the first time a new disk fails...

Yeah, I know. It sucks but whatever. I'll have the replacement in a couple of days. Note: Don't ship to Western Digital. They wanted $15 for shipping, plus $130 for collateral. Sent it back to Amazon: no charge, no deposit.
