Sony Vegas 11 FX Rendering Problem

Hi! So I'm using A soft contrast effect in Sony Vegas 11.

I'm putting in a video clip, then putting a soft contrast effect to remove a certain part of it and leave just the middle.

I'm putting a background behind the clip and it shows in the spot where the Soft Contrast is. When I render, the background doesn't show and you still see the video clip. There's a rectangle outline where the Soft Contrast should be.

Not familiar with Vegas 11 but will try to help. Is the effect placed on a different video track than the original clip or is it applied directly to the clip?
If on another video track did you put the effect above or below the video clip?
