Want to Replace Win 8 with Win 7 Pro on a new (just out of the box) Gateway DX4860. I am willing to purchase a new hard drive to accomplish this. My main question is what Bios Changes do I have to make, before or after replacing the hard drive and will I have any motherboard or Memory compatibility issues.

Solution
So far, I haven't had any issues with Windows 8 preventing me from installing Windows 7. I actually went back and forth for a little while when I was having trouble with a SSD. That said, I have no idea what to expect after Windows 8.1 drops.

If the Windows 8 install gives you trouble, just wipe that disk. You can do this from a rescue environment, such as Parted Magic (partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=start). You just boot to the rescue disk and can work from there. It has options to format, wipe, and zero write the disk, in addition to other things.

However, if you are planning on doing any upgrades to your storage configuration, now would be the time to do so.

You shouldn't have to replace the hard drive, unless you think there is something wrong with it.
Just purchase Windows 7 installation media (DVD, flash drive, or ISO file) and boot to it instead of Windows 8. Your BIOS should have a key you hit to bring up boot options. After that, just follow the installer's directions.

Your machine was available with Windows 7, so you should be fine just installing Windows 7 over the Windows 8 install. You can get Windows 7 online and create your own boot media (DVD or flash drive) or buy physical media (DVD or, sometimes, flash drive). I prefer to buy physical media and then keep it packed with the computer as sometimes the image you create yourself will have errors that the download manager missed (I have a half dozen DVDs with broken copies of Windows on them).
