Hey guys, been a while since I hung out around these parts, but I really am in a tech jam and need some good advice. I've had some sort of malware issue spread across my home computers and need to setup a sanitary environment for the clean systems while working on the infected machines. Is this at all possible with the same home cable connection and a single modem from the cable company? I don't mind having to add a second cheap router for the interim, since this may drag on for a little while it appears. I just want to be certain even if one is looking to dial out across the router for other machines, it shouldn't be able to succeed.

Thanks all.

The only truly sanitary system is an unplugged one.

Physically unplug all of them.
Sanitize one by one via CD or USB.
Plug them back in once sanitized.

Anything else (infected machines still being connected to the network) may leave all of them vulnerable.

That's my fear. The issue is that I have six PC's that all have firmware infections that need careful step-by-step flashing and I'm not the only person who needs regular internet. If I had all of the needed software tools handy it'd be one thing, but drivers and such plus reference info makes it near impossible to do everything without the net. But, I understand you may well be right. I suppose I could always setup two modems for a month with a second line in? At that point it's no different than a neighbors signal intruding into your network I'd imagine...

A second line doesn't really make a difference. If they are compromised, they should not be online at all. And if not compromised (known sanitized), just plug them into the existing connection.
