A more appropriate response would be a SATA port found on a motherboard is the interface for various disk drives in your system.

ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment

Serial ATA = SATA or Serial drives
Parallel ATA =IDE drives

Hard drives, Solid State Discs, CD/DVD/BR drives all can use SATA connections. It is a simpler, and faster, interface then the older PATA drives.
