So my step dad, and I were trying to reinstall windows xp. I bet we did something wrong because, it didnt install right, and now we get the error message bootmgr is missing. We think possibly wiping the drive would help, but how can we do it if we cant access anything but the bios. Please help. We are running windows xp home sp3, we are trying to upgrade it to professional. Please help.

Solution
When installing Windows XP, you are normally presented the option to partition a hard disk. If you delete the current partition and create a new one, you have effectively erased everything that may have been on the hard drive.

Burn this to a CD, boot into it, wipe the disk and start over.

During the Windows install, it gives you the option of deleting any and all existing partitions.
You have a Windows install disk, right?
