My MOBO is msi 790XT-G45. It's old and has the am2 CPU socket. Apparently the best CPU I can get is a phenom II? So which is the best one? An I just looking for the highest freq?

Please help before my spare cash has vanished. I need to buy ASAP. I would just call AMD but I work all day and they are closed when I get off.
In summary: msi 790XT-G45, two hd 5700, phenom I. I need to upgrade my CPU. What's my best option? Please help

Good question... My phenom I is a quad core but I can't imagine it's better than the phenom II in any way, but I'm a computer building noob as you can tell. I am upgrading for gaming though. ARMA3 to be exact. Any additional input? Thanks ghetto chicken :)

Quad cores are not better. Most Core i5 quad core processors are better than the Phenom II X6 but that's just because the architecture of the Core i5 is more efficient. The 1090t is still a nice processor though and definitely worth upgrading to if a good deal can be found on one or it's your best upgrade option.

I think you will find that the higher clocked quad cores (phenom II) are better for gaming... most games, even today don't utilize more than 4 cores.

Most AM2+ sockets will support AM3 processors and yours does. The downfalls are no on chip memory controller and no DDR3 support mainly.

The 1045T is cheap and will get you a hexacore processor but overclocking will be harder due to the multiplier being locked. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Phenom-II-X6-HDT45TWFGRBOX-1045T-6-Core-2-7-GHz-Processor-6-MB-L3-/261260188160?pt=CPUs&hash=item3cd4521a00 It's only $122.87.

The 1090T is your best option. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Phenom-II-x6-1090T-3-2-GHz-Hexacore-6-six-core-Processor-Black-HDT90ZFBK6DGR-/321179354277?pt=CPUs&hash=item4ac7c804a5 It's only $149.99 but you have to buy your own cooler and thermal paste.

A little more RAM might be useful too if you have some empty slots http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kingston-4GB-2x2GB-PC2-6400-DDR2-800Mhz-DIMM-Desktop-Memory-RAM-non-ECC-240pin-/271253886820?pt=US_Memory_RAM_&hash=item3f27fdd764 Might get you up to 8GB.

Mate check this site for CPU compatibility http://www.msi.com/product/mb/790XT-G45.html (I would check this for you but it's blocked at my work)

AM2+ motherboards in most cases are compatible with AM3 CPU's. I in fact have a phenom II x6 1090t in an AM2+ motherboard.

However if you are gaming, I would get a Phenom II X4 Black Edition 980

Thank you very much. I don't need a cooler untill I overclock right? I do want the black edition as I've experienced OCing with a locked multiplier, and it's not fun. I'm hoping I won't need to overclock immedietly.

Easy to find used on ebay or amazon.. Hard to find new... Not really worth buying new anyway because the prices are through the roof for new Phenom II X6's. It supports up to a Phenom II X4 965 as far as the quads go. I'd rather have a 1090t personally though for the extra cores. It can keep up pretty well with AMD's latest hexcore processors.

You will need some sort of cooler, stock cooling is fine if you are not overclocking.

You need a heatsinkfan and thermal paste because that CPU doesn't come with one. I wouldn't reuse an older one because these CPU's can produce a lot of heat.

Well of course it's slower there because the quad core processors are clocked higher and most games don't support more than 4 cores.. Though that is going to change in the future. The 1090T can overclock easily.

The stock cooler is here with thermal paste preapplied. http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-AMD-HEATSINK-COOLER-FAN-FOR-PHENOM-II-X6-1100T-BLACK-EDITION-SKT-AM3-/400310697961?pt=US_CPU_Fans_Heatsinks&hash=item5d34607fe9

The 1090t processors are all the same. Just get the cheapest one you can find. Get it used because the price for the new ones just are not worth it. If you buy used you also need to buy a new cooler and thermal paste.

That's exactly my point,

This is a good deal http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Phenom-II-X4-955-Black-Edition-Deneb-3-2GHz-Socket-AM3-125W-Quad-Core-CPU-/261261198152?pt=CPUs&hash=item3cd4618348

After doing a little research on your motherboard I found that you might be better off with a quad core processor because the vrms on your motherboard are not very good. Still the Phenom II 1090T will work but overclocking it is absolutely out of the question. You will be pushing it already just having it at stock settings. It can't handle a Phenom II X4 at 3.5GHz or a Phenom II X6 at 3.3GHz.
