Right now I've got an i3 ivy bridge cpu. Say in 1-2 years if I wanted to upgrade to an i5 or i7 would it be a waste of money because some other better microarchitecture either from AMD or Intel comes out that would make me buy a new motherboard as well?

Their currently is not a complete answer to your question. In two years you will still be able to purchase an ivy i5 or i7 CPU to install into your MB. Where the problem comes into play is the economics of the upgrade. Starting with the Core2 series processors the price for the high end CPU’s did not drop after years of availably in the market place. Some of them are still almost $1000. An i7 3770K in 2 years will probably be about $299 but when you compare benchmarks of the 3770 i7 to the 2015 14nm part or at that time the forthcoming 2016 7nm these parts will likely make up the 6th and 7th gen of the core i series (assuming they don’t change the name). The new i3 CPU may be just as fast or just slightly slower than the old 3770 so do...
