Well I want to buy a pair of Crucial Ballistix elite ram to go in with the rest of my other Elite ram, but the problem is that I am trying to buy an 1866mhz frequency version and I have 1600mhz in my system. Is it possible to add this ram into my system? Do I have to configure my existing ram to a higher frequency? I am trying to get the 1866mhz version since it is cheaper at the moment than the 1600mhz for some reason.

Yes DRAM can be OCed and it is done all the time, however with mixed sets of sticks such as these I wouldn't advise it, OCing is best done with a single set of sticks from 1 package

So it will all drop to 1600mhz and from there I can overclock it to 1866mhz in theory?

I would think so but I'm not an expert at overclocking so you should get some answers from others.

IMO, the memory will still run @ 1600MHz though you set the frequency manually in the BIOS. Mixing memory is never a good idea esp. advanced timing memory. As they tend to cause compatibility issues. So go with 1600MHz with the same CL and Volt. Good luck!!
