For 500$ you can get a MSI Z87 GD65 motherboard. Made for gamers and overclockers, this is a great motherboard and is hard to beat in price to performance. As for the CPU, either 4670K or 4770K if you will overclock, if not, then 4560 or 4770.

I've looked at the MSI Z87 GD65 and have not seen good feedback from them.

Look again, it's a great board, I make custom builds, and many of my builds have this mobo, every one is satisfied by it. Trust me, it's a great board. If you don't like it, look into a Maximus VI Hero.

Will do. Any thoughts on the Sabertooth Z77?

It's pricy, but if you can afford it, you can safely go for that option. Sabertooth series set a standard for high-end motherboards. One can always be proud to own one, and it looks cool with it's new armor and whatnot. But the Hero and Sabertooth are close in performance, Sabertooth excelling by not too much.

That i5 is just hiding its identity as an undercover i7, what I'm saying is, Intel filled the price and performance gap between a good i5 and a good i7, that will perform almost like an i7, and when overclocked, it makes no difference, it's not worth it. And go for Haswell, i5 4670K is the way to go.

Explaining it here would only confuse you even more, I suggest you watch videos on YouTube, pros like LinusTechTips, or TechTomorrow surely have a tutorial for that. There's also a couple software for that if you don't wanna get into all the BIOS stuff.
