GPU causing reboot?

Hi there!
I noticed this community seems extremely well fitted for this sort of question, so I thought I would post my question here and see if any of you techies could help me figure this one out :)

The problem started maybe 20 days ago? Hard to tell for sure since it was little more then an annoyance at first. I purchased a game on Steam and then some DLC's for it and started playing. Now I'd played the game no problem on my PC before; I have a Dell Inspiron 660S with 6 gigs of RAM and an Intel Core i3 3.40GHz, with an almost brand new AMD Radeon HD 7770 2GB model from Asus and a Corsair CX500 PSU, the latter two components I installed on my own to give it that personal touch and a little extra boost for gaming and such. This time when I started the game my PC rebooted almost instantly. The screen just went black then I saw the Dell Bootlogo.

Well, suffice to say ever since then things have been getting worse. I was able to fix it that night by re-installing the GPU and trying again. Well now, over two weeks have gone by and now my PC reboots all the time!
When I start Minecraft = Reboot.
When I start Dungeon Defenders = Reboot.
When I start Iridium Server Manager = Reboot.
When I click something in Google Chrome = Reboot.
When I click the desktop tile = Reboot.

I tried running a virus scan and it came up with some small threats but no virus...
Next I attempted to run a diagnostic at the boot but it crashed while testing the memory (leading me to believe it was bad memory modules or something), then I just took out my graphics card and used the onboard graphic and the problem isn't happening anymore. When I asked Dell, the support guy quickly blamed my motherboard and intends to have someone install it for me... but I really don't think the motherboard is the culprit as removing the GPU solved the problem... and my GPU is acting very odd now, sometimes the GPU usage will spike to 95% when I'm just watching the diagnostics in GPU Tweak! And I can't imagine it's a PSU problem, I just bought it!

Please give me your suggestions and opinions so i don't do something dumb and replace the wrong part! Thank you very much for taking the time to read this :)

Thanks for taking the time to investigate your problem fully and post the results here.

From your report, it seems that you have found the culprit hardware. Before you return it, make sure the GFX card is clean and free from dust. Take timestamped photo's of the card and you securely packaging it then send it back.

Other horror stories aside, my friend returned a defective motherboard only to be sent back pictures of his motherboard with many deep gouges concurrent with deliberate screwdriver damage at the other end. He couldn't prove he did not do the damage so he did not get his money back.

Thank you for your answer! I didn't notice the notification until now. What you say about the motherboard makes me wonder... Dell offered to come and have a look at my PC for free, and replace the motherboard if needed.

As long as you told them about the modifications beforehand, it's worth having a dell engineer over. Modifying a PC will typically void any warranty though so look through your paperwork and correspondance to make sure you avoid a callout charge.

Hello. Please tell me how you upgraded your PSU for the Inspiron 660 SLIM. Please tell me the model of the Corsair PSU. Does it work with the Inspiron 660s? I am looking for a new PSU
