Hi I've jus bought a new Acer cpu (Aspire x3 100) and it came with windows 8 which isn't compatible with my music software (protools). so I reinstalled windows 7 on it and now when i go to my cpu info it states that i have 12gb of ram installed which I do but also says (2.64gb useable). i didn't open the cpu at all or anything i deleted all the partitions from the windows setup and started fresh. Anybody know how i can get the use of all my 12gb of memory back???

You need a 64-bit OS to access more than 4 GB of RAM. You probably installed Win7 32-bit.

*** Edit: Oh sorry, just saw your reply, but you should have mentioned from the start you had 64-bit it would have avoided all those replies because that was the obvious answer. The only thing I can see is that since it's a new PC, Acer made drivers for Windows 8 only. Maybe Windows 7 doesn't detect the motherboard or BIOS correctly. But if Acer doesn't support Win 7 for this PC or doesn't provide drivers, it will be hard to fix.

Hey wait, you just said you were 100% sure you had a 64-bit OS, and now you're changing your mind and say you need to double-check. 100% sure is 100% sure. Stop wasting our time.

All CPUs have been 64-bit for a long time now (for 10 years or so) and they're backward compatible (can still run 32-bit software of course). So 64-bit CPU have nothing to do with the OS version. For instance, you can install a 32-bit OS and use 32-bit software with a 64-bit CPU, but not the other way around.
