ok so i have a XFX 7870 Double D, and i would like to be able to switch my main monitor between my DVI monitor and my HDMI tv, but the problem is that if i just unplug one DVI and plug in the HDMI nothing happens. i understand that to have 3 monitors hooked up that i need to have a active mini display port to hdmi adapter to make it work. how can i make it work without that?

well having all of them connected at the same time would be convenient but im on with having to switch it over to the hdmi to use my tv. but i tried unplugging my secondary dvi monitor and plugging in my hdmi tv and nothing, restarted the computer and nothing. so i am looking at trying to get a active mini display port to hdmi but it has to be active and none i have found say active.

So you've got DVI, HDMI, and a mini DP and you can't get them all to work at once? Have you tried switching the DVI to the other one maybe? i don't know why that would help, but hey, who knows. If you can't get that config to work, it sounds like a driver/hardware problem, not something you're doing wrong.
so yeah i figured out that the HDMI cable i had was faulty. so i can use 2 ports(one minidp to hdmi and a dvi, or dual dvi's) without having any kind of special converter. but if i want all three connected at the same time i need to have a active mini DP to hdmi. but i foudn that if i unplug the hdmi from my tv that goes to my pc it uses the dvi's and once i plug that hdmi in it runs with the big screen tv as the main. so it just takes like 5 second to switch it over
