I am not able to access my External USB Hard Drive. A prompt comes up that "Hardware ID is missing". I have tried connecting the hard drive to another laptop and the same prompt comes up. The drive does not show up on My Computer. Need help...cant afford to lose all the data on my hard drive!!

try:
bring up device manager. Watch it while plugging in the external. Locate the external in device manager and delete it. unplug the external from the usb port and then shutdown the pc. wait a minute and power thepc back up and then plug the external back in.
Let me know if that worked.
