AHCI conversion "no dice" after 100 tries with XP Pro and IDE.

I CANNOT find the right AHCI drivers for my motherboard and OS combination.

I'm trying to convert an IDE drive to AHCI, so I can install a Samsung 830 I got for Christmas.

Here's what I've got:

Asus P8Z68V-PRO/GEN3 and XP Professional.

(I'll post some pics of my hardware under Device Manager).

(I'll also post a screen-shot of what I've downloaded so far).

Nothing seems to work.

Trying to update drivers on "Primary IDE", running EXE files that seem to be for my hardware, following the advice on a dozen websites, all to no avail.

I cannot get the right AHCI drivers for my board so I can switch to ACHI in my BIOS.

Most of the stuff I've downloaded says "This software is incompatible with your hardware" or some crap like that.

I've searched Intel's site up and down and can't find the right drivers.

I can't do the reg hack because those keys don't exist.

Nothing works, and everytime I set the BIOS to AHCI, I get a BSOD (07b).

A site I tried to follow, but nothing worked (tried both methods):

http://expertester.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/how-to-enable-ahci-windows-xp/

I do NOT want to format/reinstall.

I do NOT want to upgrade to 7 OR 8.

I just want to convert my IDE drive to AHCI so I can install my new SSD.

Unless, of course, if someone knows if my BIOS (3603) can use an HDD on IDE and an SSD on AHCI on the Intel 6GB/sec controllers at the same time.

I have Norton Ghost, Samsung's Data Migration Tool, and Samsung SSD Magician at my fingertips.

After 100's of hours at this, if I don't find a solution, my only option may be to copy my entire HDD to a Dell Portable 1TB USB 3.0 drive and start over.

That's the LAST thing I want to do.

Please help!

1.) Go to ASUS' website and download the SATA drivers for your motherboard model. The .zip file is named Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver Software V10.6.0.1002 dated 2011/07/20.
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z68V_PROGEN3/#support_Download_22

2.) Extract the .zip file and go to folder IRST_V10601002_XPVistaWin7/Driver/Disk. You should see 2 sub-folders, one named 32bit and one named 64bit. Go to the folder that pertains to the version of Win XP that you are running.

3.) Inside the folder you will see a file named iaAHCI. Right-click on the file and select "Install".

4.) If it installs without giving you any error messages then reboot your pc, then shut down your pc and boot into BIOS and change your SATA mode to AHCI.

Dereck, I followed your advice EXACTLY, and it didn't work.

I installed the iaAHCI.inf file, nothing seemed to happen (no error messages, either).

Rebooted, everything worked, rebooted, changed to AHCI in BIOS, and got the BSOD (07b) again.

Reading the .inf file, it now looks like I have to find an ICH driver for "Intel 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family".

Popatim, my HDD is connected to the "Intel Z68 Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/sec" connector (blue).

The SSD (one day, fingers crossed!) will be connected to the "Intel Z68 Serial ATA 6.0 Gb/sec" connector (grey).

Dereck: I'll give it a try.

Thanks, guys, for your help.

Here's a question that may solve all my problems: can my HDD stay on the 3Gb blue connector and remain on IDE while the new SSD is connected to the 6Gb grey connector and uses AHCI?

If I can have the HDD remain on IDE while the SSD is on AHCI, my problems are over!

Download the F6 floppy preinstallation from the motherboard manufacturers web site. extract it.

Right clock my computer
Select manage
Open Device manager
Open IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers
Right click the storage device you want to switch to AHCI mode
Select update driver, do not search and have disk.
Browse to your extracted drivers click the one you want (AHCI) and ok

For Z68 (and probably P67 now to) the new Intel drivers changed the name to
"Intel Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA AHCI controller"

Restart changing BIOS to AHCI mode and reboot. new device will be found. XP will install driver automatically and require another restart.
