So today i finally got a GTX 660 SuperClocked gpu in-store at Microcenter. I got an open-box model, but it came in original packaging and came with all the accesories: driver disc, molex to 6 pin PCI-E adapter, DVI to VGA adapter, manuals. Anyways, i had multiple problems after installing the physical gpu. I need to have some feedback and answers so if i can know if its a problem with my system or the gpu or what, so that tomorrow i can get an exchange and know what to expect when installing a new one.
So i took out two slot covers, put it into the PCIE slot and plugged in one PCIE connector, closed up my case, reattached all my stuff, attached the DVI to VGA, attached my monitor to the adapter, and powered it up.
The first problem i had was that the screen had random colored horizontal lines running across it and it looked like my monitor was busted basically. I could still manage to see the screen though, so i logged on (I have Windows 8 64-bit) and popped in the driver disk. I started the driver program and clicked on "install video drivers." Nothing would happen, only a little box would pop up and say something like "supports Windows XP, Vista, 7, 32 and 64 bit systems" and the only option was to click ok. I clicked ok and it just closed and nothing would happen. I kept trying with the same results, nothing. Eventually somehow, my pc restarted and crashed and began beeping. I turned it off and back on and when it booted it made me system restore to "when windows worked." Nothing was lost, thankfully, but i noticed it was a little slow now, maybe because of it having been a little ****** by NVIDIA or EVGA somehow. I kept trying to install the drivers via the disk and also online from EVGA's site like was said in the manual, still with nothing happening except for crashing and having to reboot. After i would reboot and log back on, a Windows dialogue box would ask me to send an error report because some program or something made my system restart. I decided to open my case back up and try installing the gpu again and reconnecting all my devices like monitor, printer, mouse, etc etc., i did the whole drivers thing again with the same results, nothing happening and crashing soon after. Now, i just took out the gpu and put it back in the box ready to return tomorrow. Im literally typing this right after this whole ordeal. I'm very annoyed and scared that my system is messed up because of this trash, especially becasue this is a new rig and my first gaming pc, but it seems ok now. I connected my monitor back to my motherboard obviously since the gpu is out now. The display is normal now as well. If anybody has had any of the same or similar problems please comment below and say if you fixed it and how. Any feedback or answers as to why any of this might have happened, and how to possibly fix these problems if they happen again next time, will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for such a long post, but please read it all to know my situation and what problems happened. Thanks!

Need a better PSU, the GPU calls for a min of a 450 PSU, your's is listed at 430 which is actually peak, it's about 385 for sustainedbut isnt the amount of wattage going to the card itself what matters? My current rig shouldn't be having much wattage draw? Does that explain the crashing, monitor problems, etc?

Best solution
Probably yes, many PSU's advertise at peak, such as yours, it's actually rated at 384 (I was close
), but the card also requires 28 Amps this is marginal at 32, and being superclocked it will draw more than the ref design........if nothing else, see if you can borrow a better one and see if the problems go away

Anyways, if i am to get like a 500 or 600 watt psu, do you think the issues will go away? Do i need to worry about Amps or rails or anything too? Still, what about the lines it made on the screen and it not wanting to install the drivers. The psu upgrade sounds like it might fix crashing, but leaves the rest of the problems unsolved still. Any help there?

You'll want true continuous of prob 475 or better - if you shop for them at the Egg can click on the picture of the CPU and they almost always have a pic of the label which will show Amps and Wattage on the primary rail(s)What about a Corsair CX500M or a Corsair CX600M?

Don't remember the 600 off hand but am positive the 500 carries at least 450 continuous and is about 37 Amps, so it will be fine as would the 600 (my pref, I like a little extra headroom, never know what you might want to add)thanks. i hyperlinked them to their microcenter pages by the way, in case you didnt know. just click on either the CX500M or CX600M. I linked these as well, so just click on them for specs and stuff.

The GTX660 Superclocked has a single PCIe power connection. That means it draws no more than 150W (75W from the slot, and 75W from the single cable. During typical use (including gaming) it will be less. The Corsair CX-430M has enough amperage to run this card 24/7; so does the 380W Antec Earthwatts.

Everything Tradesman told you is accurate, an underpowered computer will act up and not run correctly. The thing you want to do now is obtain a higher powered PSU so that you can verify that the video card you bought is not defective as it was an open box. A 430w PSU is on the low side anyways and yo do want a 500w or 600w PSU so that you have enough watts to run the computer.
Remember everything in the computer requires power from the fans to the CPU, everything gets plugged in.
Take a swing by your local Micro Center and you may find a good deal on a PSU. You don't want to lock yourself in with an underpowered PSU and not be able to add another component or overclock the CPU or GPU.

While it is possible that the CWT-built Corsair CX-430M was defective, it should have enough power. The strange horizontal color bands (even before the machine is logged into Windows) suggest a GPU or monitor problem to me, or possibly a loose cable.
Check which of the two DVI ports you used. One is DVI-I and the other is DVI-D; make sure you plugged your VGA adapter into the DVI-I connector.
If that doesn't help, before giving up, remove all of your video drivers (will default back to a standard Windows VGA driver most likely), reboot, and then install the latest drivers for your card from www.nvidia.com.

Yeah, i had doubts that a 430 watt psu could support this card, especially since its superclocked it will draw more wattage. I think the crashing was possibly because of low power with the addition of the card. The card must have been defective which explains the lines on my screen. Today im going back to MicroCenter to exchange it for a different 660 SC card and hopefully get a deal on a 500 or 600 watt psu. Im also gonna explain what happened to one of my buddies who works there to get his opinion and get some solutions to make this work

I really doubt my psu is defective because i haven't had any problems with it or my pc running off of it until i added the GTX 660 SC, which i have since removed. I connected the adapter to the only one that it would fit into, i dont remember if it was the DVI-I or DVI-D, but it would only go into one of them, it was the bottom one if i remember correctly.
Could it have been having problems because i had drivers installed from AMD? I have an AMD A10 6800k apu which has integrated graphics and i had to install a driver or multiple drivers for it to work best. Could that have had anything to do in the problems i was facing? When i get a new 660 SC card should i remove any drivers before installing the 660 SC, then install drivers for the card? Any help there?
UPDATE: i did attach the adapter into the DVI-I, which is the right one to put it into according to EVGA: EVGA Specs/Requirements Spreadsheet

Yes, remove prior video drivers. If you had to revert to the IGP, Windows will provide default drivers until you replace them.IMHO, the banding points to a problem with the card or its cable, not power.
How would i remove the drivers? Ive never had to deal with drivers, i just install them and forget about it. What do you mean revert back to the IGP? Sorry, ive just never heard of that or anything. I agree, the lines probably are because of the card itself .

First of all i just want to say thanks so much to everyone that helped me in this post. So, today i went back to MicroCenter and exchanged the GTX 660 SC for a different GTX 660 SC and i finally installed it. I removed the AMD drivers that i had for my 6800k apu's integrated graphics and i guess the NVIDIA drivers installed automatically when i logged onto my account because it shows NVIDIA drivers and programs in control panel> programs & features. They are "NVIDIA 3D Vision Driver 311.06" "NVIDIA Graphics Driver 311.06" and "NVIDIA Update 1.11.3" So far there have been no problems and i went to CanYouRunIt.com to see if the new specs showed up correctly, i specifically chose Far Cry 3 to test. Took a screenshot for proof and you are welcome to take a look at the results: Click Here
Once again, thanks so much to everyone that helped me, i think it finally works, hope i didnt jinx myself

The driver version that you listed is not the most current, I would go to Nvidia's site and download the current drivers.Okay, i went over to Nvidia's site and i found this driver for GeForce GTX 660, GEFORCE R320 GAME READY DRIVER. Is that the right one for me to install?

This has nothing to do with the power supply! I have the same problem on my computer. It's the same card too. If the Windows 8 logo at start-up looks fine, then goes in to a striped looking thing, it's probably windows. My PSU gives 650 watts. I tried installing it in my friends computer. He's still running windows 7, and he only has a 430w PSU. It works fine there. Try installing it in another Windows 8 pc. If it dosen't work, try Windows 7.
I am going to install Windows 7 on my computer after i've posted this answer. If it worked, i'll post it here.

This was already solved, sorry didnt choose a BA. It was a bad card, i exchanged it for the same model, but different card and it was fixed.
