PS3, Firmway update causes black screen, no controller sync

I recently brushed off my ps3 after a year of limited use and bought Dynasty Warriors 8 for it. I turned it on, worked fine, put in the game and demanded a firmware update or the game wouldnt run. So I agree and the game begins to copy the data for the Firmware update onto the PS3. I havent had the internet connected to my ps3 for about 2 years now (due to it, for some reason, not being able to connect to wifi or ethernet) so its firmware was pretty old and it tried to update it to 4.XX, not completey sure the last 2 digits.

After the firmware data was done copying over to the PS3's hardrive the screen went black. I figured it was part of the update but after 30 minutes nothing had changed, the screen was still black. I turned off the ps3 and back on and there was still only a black screen, the controller refusing to sync as well. There is actually no signal being sent to the TV from the PS3 with HDMI or Composite cables. I found this out because my TVs inputs are only accessable if something is being transmitted to them.

I searched online and tried reverting the setting by holding down the power button and I also tried going into safe mode by doing the former and then holding it again until I hear 2 consecutive beeps. This was all to no avail as no signal was ever sent to the TV. However, the controller will reconnect to the PS3 after the 2 consecutive beeps for a couple of seconds before it reverts to just continuesly blinking. I replaced all the cables and also tried turning the TV off and unplugging it as I had read that sometimes the handshake between the HDMI and the TV can be severed, none of that worked either. I called Sony and after a bit of testing what I had already done they recommended that I turn it in for repair but I am not too fond of the $130 price tag that comes with that.

I was hoping one of you knows of some sort of home remedy to this situation as I have had this PS3 since it launched back in 2006 and would prefer it over the newer, slim kind and hte price tag that accompanies them.

Thanks for any help, it is truly appreciated!

There is not much you can do to repair a PS3 when it has decided to die, I had a similar problem with mine that I had for 5 years (PS3 chrome/gloss/fat) Sent mine in and got a slim which I didn't like at first but it was okay.

You sent yours in to get repaired by Sony and they sent you back a slim, not the original?

Well thats odd. I called them and they said they would repair it for around $130 and offered to upgrade the HDD to a 250 gig for another $99 but that would remove the backwards compatibility. I will have to double check with them if they repair or replace. Thanks for the info!

Sony will repair or replace at there option from what I understand. If yours can not be repaired they will replace it and at this time I doubt very much that they will have any fat models to replace it with so it would be a slim. Plus since Sony does not support backwards compatibility any more that would not be a option anyway.

A friend of mine sent in his Fat PS3 that had hardware compatibility for PS2 games and got back a slim model instead. Sony said in the emails that followed that a repair or replace was completely at there discretion and since they were no longer able to get parts for his fat PS3.

Jeez I will have to talk with them some more. I LOVE my old PS3, i kinda dislike the newer ones. Do you all have any suggestions as to where I can get my fat, day one, 2006, 60gb ps3 repaired? I saw this website that is completely dedicated to fixing PS3s but something seems off about it...
http://www.fixmyplaystation.com/
Does anyone have anything to say about that website or other possible suggestions? I tried calling Best Buy and they no longer repair PS3s and reffered me to Sony.
Thanks for all the help so far!!

Sony is your place to get it fixed, if you go with websites like www.fixmyplaystation.com you will have some freedom with how you choose your device to be handled but there is no guarantee they can fix it. And dude, when I lost my launch day PS3 it felt like I had received the bad end of the knife in the heart.
