I was playing Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and that's the temp it was at according to MSI Afterburner. I haven't changed the fan settings or overclocked yet. Just wondering if that's a fine temp to play at or if I should increase the fan speed for longevity.

55C is icy for a 7970. Mine has been locked at 90-95C 24/7 for 16 months without issue.

50-55 is perfectly fine for a 7970. I wouldn't mess with the fan if that's what you're getting while you are gaming.

55C is practically idling, you are safe up to 80C, even 90C if you wanted. Generally a 7970 with a cooler like that would be somewhere around 70C to 85C when gaming, but AC Brotherhood is hardly a demanding game anymore.
