Very Hot Idle (FX 8320)

Finished building a new system yesterday and I can't help but notice the high temperatures on the FX 8320. It idles about 45-50 degrees which is too hot. I had to reapply thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 and resit the heatsink because with the out of the box paste it was idling at 50+ degrees. And because it's so hot, the fan is always maxed out which is pretty loud.
Could it be airflow in the case or just the stock heatsink being bad?
Thanks

System is: FX 8320, Asrock 970 Extreme4, 4gb Corsair Vengeance RAM, EVGA GTX 760 ACX SC, Corsair CXM500W

amds will clock down to as low as 800mhz, well my phenom II does, not sure about the FX series.

will only happen if windows is in low power or balanced mode, in performance mode the processor will stay clocked at 100%
did you spread the paste? if you did try the rice grain in the middle method and let the paste spread itself when you place on the cpu cooler, place the cpu cooler down and give it a slight twist or two while pressing down before clamping it, also once the cooler is down dont lift it at all, see if this helps.

I have one fan in the case (with two on the way) and a large fan blowing in from the outside. I have no plans to OC so I wanted to stick with the stock heatsink but the fan is so goddamn loud..

No I didn't spread it, I used the rice method, I did a bit of twisting and I made sure not to lift it :(

it could be that you did not use enough paste or used too much, remove the cooler and see if paste was going over the edges and if it is you used too much, if its still only a small patch in the middle, you did not use enough.

clean it off the do it over again with a bit more or less paste.

I might try that soon if the temps don't sort themselves out soon. Is there a break in period for new thermal paste?

it should only be an hour or two of use but it will only decrease the temp by 2 - 5 degrees on load, idle temps should not be so bad, do you have cool and quiet enabled and low power mode enabled in windows?

it could be that the cpu is not getting throttled down.

also what are load temperatures like?

That could be a solution as looking at the clock speeds, it's always running at 3.6GHz.
And under load it reaches a max at around 60-70 degrees.

Also seems to be at a high voltage when idle, at around 1.3-4V. My Intel rig when idle uses 0.8V. I'm not so good with AMD CPUs, but is the frequency supposed to fall down to around 1.6GHz when idle like my i5-3570k?

You're a legend thank you. Put it in balanced mode and frequency falls to 1.3 ghz and temps are already down to 35-40 degrees which is a whole lot more normal. And the voltage is down to 0.9V when idle :)

i would look at that paste again still or just get a better cooler, check what its like for temps on load and if its still near 70 then i would check the paste like i mentioned.

if when redoing it its still hot you might want a better cooler or try improving the ventilation in your case first.

Running a stress test now, I'll let you know the temps.

Ran a quick test and it got up to 80 degrees on the blend test.. Then it stayed at around 77 degrees. I don't think I'll be doing that again.
In a normal game it stays at 60 degrees.

Running another test, it ended up being around 66 degrees. Might have to check the thermal paste after all.. And yeah, I have that cooler on my Intel rig, it's pretty good.

Okay well after more testing I discovered that it gets very hot in game. I was playing Tomb Raider and it got up to 80 degrees which is ridiculous. Idle temps are now fine however. I'll reapply thermal paste tomorrow and see what happens.

I am considering it but surely the stock cooler is enough to keep normal temps with no OC. It seems silly that AMD would send a heatsink and fan that can't actually do the job properly.
