Windows 7 is running very slowly and unresponsive

I have HP pavilion lap with windows 7 for two years now.few months ago,it started to be slow,I tried every thing,I made virus scan,cleaned the cache,deleted temporary files,deleted some programs and nothing worked. Now the problem became worse.when I open any file or program or try to search the net I get (not responding) message every few seconds.After few seconds it works again,but still very slow. I need help!

yes I did,several times actually and it didn't fix the problem.I have to say that this problem started to show up since windows installed updates from the internet.I didn't want to let these updates change my machine,but I didn't know at that time how to stop it.Now I stopped automatic updates and I am trying to delete some of them randomly as they are so many,but I still get (not responding) message.
