Single Stick of Memory from a Pair

I am trying to find a stick of 4GB DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) memory which is becoming stinking expensive. But I did find one from a pack or two. Somebody voiced a concern that when sticks are sold as a pair, they need to used as a pair and not broken up. I don't see why this would be but I thought I better make sure before I make the investment.
This is to upgrade a HP MediaSmart Server that only has one memory slot.

Solution
only one ram slot in the PC? Odd. One stick will work, it will just run in single channel mode. Two sticks (requiring two slots) would work better because it would run in dual channel mode. In your application, one stick will be fine.

You replied just as I was updating my post, thank you very much. This is to upgrade a HP MediaSmart Server that only has one memory slot.

The sold as a pair and used as a pair pretty much estates to the use of multiple channels. If you are going to use more than one stick, the other sticks need to be of EXACT same specs. Your one stick SHOULD work, but just not as well as it is meant to with two channels.

I finally found some specs for the stick I am looking at, and it is indeed dual channel. But it seems that this type of memory is drying up quickly so there are not a lot of choices.

Since this is quite a compact server, the bulk of the size is for 4 Drives. The mobo is tiny with no frills, not even a graphics connection.
Thanks for your answer.

Wow these prices are crazy. I could get twice the memory for half the cost if it were DDR3. Right now my two best options are the single stick from a pair with a CL5 rating for $90 or one sold as a single stick with a CL6 rating for $104. Both are new. I am beginning to think it may well not be worth the investment. It is currently a 2GB stick that I don't have any specs on.

Yes DDR2 is old news, and the market for supply and demand isn't there. So the price will remain that way until its basically non existent. If i were you id fork up the extra $14 for the CL6 if maintaining the is important to you.

Pretty much everything on this server is old school. Even Windows Home Server software is going away. But it serves it purpose well so I was thinking of upgrading before parts are no longer existent at all.

Thanks for all the help, Rich
