680 DirectCU II TOP replacement

Hello :) 

I currently have an Asus 680 GTX DirectCU II Top running at 1200Mhz (stock BIOS). I play on 1080P with 144Hz, I have a second monitor but I only use it to display my temps and fan speeds. I play games like Battlefield 3 (and 4 when it comes out), Tomb Raider, Bioshock etc. When playing those games (everything on max, AA turned off, FXAA turned on), I sometimes experience some framedrops below 55, which I notice as a slight stuttering.

I want a setup that can handle those games everything maxed out with no framedrops below 70fps.

My question is, to which GPU should I upgrade? I have following options:
1. 760 SLI
2. 770 single and SLI later
3. 780 single and SLI later
4. Get a second 680 for SLI. The DirectCU II Top is a tripple slot card > the fan of the upper card would touch the backplate of the other one if I run them in PCI 8x/8x.

Here are my other system specs:
Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Formula
CPU: 3770K at 4.2Ghz
RAM: 16GB at 1600Mhz
PSU: Corsair AX860i - this PSU should handle two 780 fine, right?

To notice a difference immediately- You get either

gtx760 sli(cheapest option)

gtx780 now and one later(expensive but worthy upgrade)

Also give away your gtx680 top to me :p 

AX 850 should be fine for all the options listed

well if you want max out all games with 70+ fps then GTX 780 is they way to go.

Thanks, I'll wait for the MSI 780 GTX Twin Frozr OC to get released here in Switzerland EU then :)

Now the circumstances have changed: I could get a 690 GTX for 500 CHF (= around 500USD). The 690 GTX is obviously faster and cheaper than the MSI 780 GTX Twin Frozr OC (around 750 CHF). The only concern I have is microstuttering, but I read that it only occurs when playing above 1440P.

Should I go with the 690 GTX or still wait for the MSI 780 GTX Twin Frozr OC? Has anyone experience any problems with the 690 GTX like microstuttering due to SLI?

GTX 690 for 500$ ! its like half the price at USA ! you will certainly see more FPS if you buy that card. as far as microshuttering goes i heard hat nvidia fixed it a long time ago.

I am currently playing on 1080P, later maybe 1440P. Will the 2GB of the 690 be enought? I now see my 680 using around 85% while playing Battlefield 3 (without AA enabled).
Would the 780 with its 3GB VRAM maybe the better solution for future games like Battlefield 4 and Watch Dogs?

i think GTX 690 comes with 4 GB Std, 2GB for each GTX 680. so it won't be much of a problem.

VRAM does not add in SLI (or Crossfire). There will only be 2GB usable.

yes 2GB per GPU, and you have 2 GTX 680's. and each GTX 680 is handling half of the screen.so even if you max out at 1440p,and if a single GTX 680 used let's say 3GB, the GTX 680 in your GPU will use 1.5 GB as its rendering half of the screen the other GTX 680 will also use 1.5GB. so your safe.

I'm pretty sure that's not what happens. AFAIK each GPU renders the entire screen, and therefore there is no doubling in VRAM. Doesn't make much sense to me that a GPU would render half a screen.. hm..
I don't use SLI myself, but that just doesn't seem logical to me.

The VRAM on both cards is the same and they just calculate different frames.
1. Frame calculated by the 1. GPU
2. Frame calculated by the 2. GPU
3. Frame calculated by the 1. GPU
etc.
Both are calculating the whole screen and have the same VRAM. The only difference is the calculated frame.

So my question still is: Do you think that 2GB of VRAM will be enought to max out BF4 and Watch Dogs f.e. in 1080 / 1440P?

@freddy1765, i think SLI render's in two way's. the one i stated is called "split frame rendering". other one is "alternate frame rendering", in which one each GPU render's entire screen, but one GPU processes odd frames (3,5,7) etc while the other one processes even frames (2,4,6). it seems we'r both right :p , though nowaday's AFR is mostly used.

@DavidRappl i still don't think the vram won't be much of a problem in 1440p.
