Thermal Paste Sitting out

I am reapplying thermal paste to my PS3 GPU and CPU, however I ran out of paste and only had enough for the GPU. Will the paste that I applied to the GPU still be okay sitting out all night? I am going to buy some paste to put on the CPU and finish the job today. Do I need to start fresh and apply paste to both chips again or should what I have on the GPU be okay?

Solution
It will probably start to dry out a bit as it's exposed to air. Myself, I would redo them both in the morning when you get new thermal paste. If you had only did the CPU, I wouldn't worry as much but the GPU in a PS3 is what takes the brunt of the work and heat and is usually the chip that dies, so I would want fresh paste on there before putting it back together or you're just asking to enter Yellow Light of Death territory.

If you can't do that, I would try to lightly cover it with plastic wrap or something, but really, just redo both in the morning.

FYI, after fixing over 1000 PS3's, for thermal paste for them that works the best, I find, is Artic Ceramique.

Thermal paste is usually pretty stable when "left out". So there is very little worry about it having gone bad overnight. It never really goes bad. One thing to think about is, if it was left uncovered overnight there may be dust that has gotten stuck to it. You won't necessarily be able to see it. I don't think it would affect the performance of the paste too much but you may want to clean it off depending on personal preference. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about it but I don't think anyone would fault you for re-applying once you get the new tube.
