That’s good to hear. Yes you can install Windows 8 32 bit with only 1GB of RAM.

Windows 8 is the most efficient and fastest Windows operating system yet, but its real forte on such a system as yours which only meets the minimum specifications are the components you will find built in. For example, Windows Defender, which provides full virus and malware protection, is built right in. You will not need to install third party security software which might slow your system down. Internet Explorer 10 with native support for Java and Flash technologies also keeps everything under one roof, easy to update and exceptionally efficient.

Any system can be made to run slowly with the wrong applications installed. My advice to you on a...

I believe you meet the bare minimum, but you should add some ram if you can.

•Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)

•RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

•Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

•Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Your PC will probably be slightly faster after a win 8 upgrade but you'd likely experience a similar perceivable speed up with a clean XP install. In short yes, you can install 8 on your PC. I installed W8 on a netbook recently with a lowly Atom single core and it runs better than XP did.

You have one of the hard processors to determine. There were versions of the 3GHz Pentium 4 with support for NX and without. Support for NX is required for Windows 8. To know for sure you can look in your BIOS for NX or XD settings, or you can download and run the Sysinternals tool Coreinfo. A star next to the NX entry would mean NX is supported. Remember Coreinfo is a command line tool that will need to be run from an Administrative Command Prompt.

If your processor supports NX, I would recommend only the 32 bit version of Windows 8 or that you upgrade the system to 2GB of RAM, as 2GB is the recommended minimum for the 64 bit version of Windows 8.

The CoreInfo tool I linked above will answer whether or not the processor supports NX. SSE2 and PAE should be supported in all Pentium 4 processors.

You can also run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, which will evaluate your current hardware and applications, but bear in mind that you cannot upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 8. You can keep your personal files, but the operating system and applications will be overwritten entirely. If you have specific models of hardware you would like to search for compatibility information for, such as the onboard graphics, Ethernet, and audio, you can search for information at the Windows Compatibility Center.

Any system can be made to run slowly with the wrong applications installed. My advice to you on a machine with the specifications of yours is to keep your installation light and I believe you will find Windows 8 to be quick and capable.

If you are able to back up your data and feel comfortable with installing an operating system from scratch, I would suggest that you try before you buy. The Windows 8.1 Preview will let you install and experience the latest iteration of Windows and see how it runs on your hardware and with your applications. The Windows 8.1 Preview will expire on January 15, 2014, before which time you will need to perform a clean installation to a licensed operating system, either back to Windows XP or to a licensed copy of Windows 8.

Lastly, if you are looking for more and deeper information than the links above provide, be sure to check out the Windows 8 at the Springboard Series on TechNet. The Springboard Series on TechNet is a collection of resources for IT professionals and administrators who work with the Windows Client. For example, for more information on the above items and the new features and technologies available in Windows 8, the Windows 8 Jump Start is second to none.
