Try this.
download the Vista version of 'Canoscan Toolbox' software from the Canon Support site (http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer_Products/produc...), install and ran the compatibility wizard.

1. Tried to download the Vista TWAIN driver onto windows 8.1, the install file was downloaded, but when I ran it, the install routine opened briefly to ask where to install then closed within a second. The OS still doesn't recognixe the scanner. Does the driver have a file name that I can search for?

2. You mention "compatibility wizard" as if everyone knows what that is. There may be a wizard like that on W 8.1, but how do you access it?

Open a browser of your choice and enter "https://www.google.com". Search for "win 8 compatibility wizard" there.
