Best AMD quad-core cpu

Solution

I agree. FX6300 is a better option.
Previously all systems tests always showed the most 'extreme' Quad Core AMD model would be at level to a Intel i3 Core or a lower end i5 at best. Has this changed at all? I never saw previously any AMD (I was very sad about this) would match a i5 as 'middle of the road performance' and i7 as 'high to extreme level performance'. Thanks!

Realistically, only the AMD FX 8350 rivals the Intel i5, performance-wise. It can beat an i5 when using all cores, but still loses at single-thread performance, even when only pitted against the i5 3330 (the lowest-end Ivy Bridge i5).

The FX 4300 and FX 4350 (AMD's most recent quad-cores) don't even come close to an i5, and are defeated even by the i3, in some situations.

There is no true AMD contender for the i7, which obliterates the FX 8350.

AMD still make great products though - their price/performance ratio is superb. Hopefully, AMD will soon have something to better rival Intel's offerings. That would be great.

I owned AMD chips since my first PC a 386DX-40 , and always preferred them till the iCore series came out. Since that came out, I read exactly as your saying, and sadly feel that since they bought out ATI to try and make a 'All in One Chip' (the APU) they lost focus and are never going to contend again Intel again. Now with the way ATI is being mishandled (they refuse to work on any displays over 60Hz and just saw at CostCo a 240Hz display OMG!!!! BEAUUUUTTIIIFULLLL!!!) I am unfortunately thrown int he towel to Intel / NVidia.

My M17x R2 with Gen1 i7 core still works nicely all these years, and with my final upgrades (switch from 5750M to a 670M, add SSD and 16GB Ram) to this beast, I know I will get a couple more years before I am too underpowered to perform most 'taxing' things. I can't say the samething as I see all these A6, A8, etc. AMDs which seem to be made to be disposable like cellphones. SIGHS. Thanks for the update.

Yeah, I think AMD have realised that contending with Intel is futile, so found a niche in the market where their APU can contend. AMD's APUs obliterate Intel when it comes to the integrated graphics. I do agree with you though, they've completely lost focus with what 90% of the market wants - A powerful CPU.

Shame, really. I've always liked AMD, but with their new found obsession for APUs, their future with me is probably none-existent.
