Okay so I am building my first ever PC I have a budget of £1000 minus £40 for OS gives me £960 left to spend and as I’m new to the practice I definitely don’t trust my own judgement - I don't even know if the components I have chosen would work together or even if I've missed any out. Any help would be appreciated.
I just copy pasted and filled out the template for this type of question below apologies if it is too long.

Approximate Purchase Date: As soon as I have a good component list

Budget Range: £1000 after all expenditures

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing internet and other mundane things that do not require expensive hardware, watching films.

Are you buying a monitor: Yes but I do not know exactly what is needed in a monitor – only that you should probably invest a decent amount to reap the benefits of a good GPU. I really need some advice on the monitor front.

Parts to Upgrade: Everything that should be upgraded from what I have already chosen with my very limited computing knowledge.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes and I know that at my local PC store I can get Windows 7 Professional 64 bit for £40 if I bring in my PC once built and running so that leaves the rest of my budget at £960

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Well I’m in the UK so I've been using ebuyer and Amazon, though I know there must be other good sites, it’s just PC part picker seems optimized for US based sellers and newegg doesn’t ship to UK (at least I think they don’t?)

Location: East Anglia, UK

Parts Preferences: Intel CPU – am I right in thinking an overclocked i5 would be a good bet for gaming as long as I ensure suitable cooling? As this is the first PC I’m building and I’m pretty stupid tech wise I probably won’t overclock it straight away but after a short while why not? In terms of GPU I don’t really know much about the difference between Nvidia and AMD GPUs but the whole Physx thing bugs me. The two games that utilize it that I would probably play would be the new Batman games and the Metro games. I was thinking of getting a Radeon card but tbh I don’t really know what to look for. Is an Nvidia card essential for the games I mentioned? I definitely need some advice here. (PS could someone tell me why if both 7970 and 7950 are 3gb then why is one so much more expensive?)

Overclocking: Yes in the future so I will probably have to get a cooling system I guess. I would probably get an i5 and overclock it to around 4.0 GHz. (I really have no idea what I am talking about) I was also thinking about getting a Radeon 7950 hd 3gb and eventually Overclocking it so that it was more comparable to how a 7970 would perform, but I know even less about Overclocking a GPU than I do about a CPU.

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe, I have a vague idea that this is just combining GPUs but i do not know how it works. I would not think I would be spending enough for it to be worth doing now but in the future perhaps.

Your Monitor Resolution: again I don’t really have a clue about the monitor but I guess it goes to say that 1920*1080 is a standard lower bound for gaming PCs.

Additional Comments: I don’t really have much opinion on having a fancy looking machine just a sleek and solid one that preferably isn’t too loud. In terms of games I would like to play almost all games except for the top notch ones at at least high settings and decent fps, the ones i own but can hardly play are the last 3 total war games, the metro games, the witcher 2 and even Dishonoured hardly runs at a half decent res! I should also probably mention that I will probably get a adapter for my xbox 360 controller to use for some PC games - is it an easy process to install necessary software for adapter and to use the xbox controller? I want to finally have a chance at beating Super Meat Boy after having bought it not long after it came out then realizing how stressful keyboard controls are!

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: current PC cannot run demanding games at all (2.5GHz, 512mb VRAM and 6 RAM) and is used by others in house so I don’t want to hog the PC, therefore I want to invest in a £1000 gaming PC.

Here are the parts I already found and thought might be suitable - as I said I don't really know what I'm doing and if the parts are even compatible.

Sorry for any grammatical errors, and I did search around before posting but most advice seemed to be for either $1000 or $2000 whereas I am somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I would pay a little more and get the latest chipset and socket from Intel - Haswell 1150.
So you'll need a Z87 motherboard and i5 4670K, costing a bit more but should be more upgradeable in the future and with more features. Also take a look at the HIS HD 7950 IceQ Boost on EBUYER. Its got one of the most efficient aftermarket coolers around and overclocks unbelievably well while also being amazing value for money! In some games the 7950 beats the new GTX 770 that costs a fair chunk more.
You have also chosen a CPU cooler for an AMD APU not an INTEL one so I suggest you find the right one. I don't think ebuyer stock the Hyper EVO 212 v2 but you can get it on amazon or ebay.

The rest looks good but I also no nothing about monitors so can't comment on that other than IPS is better than TN panels.
