Hello,

I am in need of replacing my power supply, and I am here to ask for suggestions on what I need/should get.

I recently replaced my mother board with an Asus Sabertooth 990 FX R2.0 and I also added an FX-8350 processor. I am running dual 5770's in my computer as well.

I used the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator on my machine, and it determined that I should have a 486w Power supply, but I read places that I should have 600w because of the cards. I do not mind having overkill, as I do plan to eventually upgrading the video cards.

I was looking at this power supply here

Any suggestions and insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Both of those 400w units are VERY expensive and for the same money he could get an xfx550 which is made by seasonic and definitely the one to go for.

If you buy that by the 14th with EMCXMXM47 promo code, it takes $20 off. No-brainer to me.
A 5770 only uses ~100W at full load, so it's extremely unlikely your whole system would be over 400W at load. Something from the usual suspects at Seasonic, Antec, Corsai, or FSP in the 400W range will be fine, 450W if you want to give yourself extra room. That capacity will also serve fine with a single mid-to-higher end card like a 7870 or 760. If you plan on dropping in a really beefy card later, you might want to step up to the 550W range. You won't need anything 600W or above unless you want to run dual high-end GPUs.

Din't forget that the TDP of his CPU is 125w. Also Good luck finding a 400w unit with 2x 6-pin connectors.

OP, get a 500w unit from the brands listed.

Rail count isn't a big thing, so long as all +12V rails together can still provide adequate wattage. Say a PSU has four 12V rails and each rail alone can deliver 18A ( so each rail on its own can go up to 216W. ) However, that doesn't mean you can just add them all up and say the PSU will output 864W on the 12V rails. Check the sticker under the rails and it usually has a single box under all the 12V rail boxes showing how much power can be drawn at once over all the rails together. Make sure that's enough for your cards and you'll be ok.

As for connectors, others have already mentioned that you'll need at least two 6-pin PCIe connectors for your two existing cards. If you want to upgrade your GPUs in the future, I'd recommend you get a PSU that has 8-pin connectors too ( sometimes listed as 6+2-pin. )

Don't forget that TDP does not directly translate to actual wattage used. Even if it did, that still leaves 75W for the rest of the system, more than enough.

And it's not hard to find a 400W PSU with multiple PCIe connectors if you look.

Either of these will be enough for your current system. Both would also support a single beefy GPU as well. If you can get a good deal on a 500W PSU, that's not a bad way to go either. But you don't need more than 450W unless your GPU takes a drastic change for the high-end.

Why are you making such a big deal about $60-$70 for an 80 Gold PSU vs $70 for a bigger 80 Bronze? That's "VERY expensive"? Without that rebate, it's a push at best.
