My Windows XP freezes at various stages of start up, it runs in safe mode but won't system restore. The computer was bought legite but has now ran out of guarantee. My mate has a dodgy XP CD which he says will go over the top of my original, I have so far refused but I can't use my PC unless I allow him to install the dodgy version, and I will lose my info on the original version if he formats the hard drive which he says is the best option. HELP ME PLEASE !!!!!

You can get an OEM XP disk from the vendor as it was probably an OEM disk. A hacked or retail version of the XP disk won't work with the OEM key you should have with your system. Even if you lost all the disks you had, they will send you one for about $20-30 max.

You should format the drive, if you did not have backups, buy a new hard drive and install the new Windows setup on that.

To add to what Traciatim said, you can install Windows XP from any cd as long as your key is genuine. You also do not have to format the hard drive. You can do a system repair by following the guide outlined here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
