I am currently getting together all the parts for my first Gaming Build in almost 10 years(How times have changed). Here are a few system specs to give you an idea of where I am going

i5-3570k
Asus Sabertooth Z77
16gb(2x8) G.Skills Ripjaws X 1866mhz
2-way SLi Asus GeForce 670 4gb
Fractal Define XL R2
Kraken X60 or custom watercooling

My questions are with Storage.
I currently have 3 SSD drives.
Samsung 840 Pro 128gb
Samsung 840 Pro 256gb
Samsung 840 Pro 512gb

I plan to only install two of these. I was thinking I would use the 128gb for OS boot and the 512gb for all other storage needs until more space is needed I can always install more.

My question is would I be better off selling my 512gb and getting another 256gb to run in RAID or stick with the 512gb?

Also, with planning to use this build for Heavy Gaming(Steam, Full Disc installs, etc.) how long do you think 512gb will last me without having to install more storage? I would really love to wait on the SSD prices to drop so I could install a TB or 2 without having to go HDD.

Thanks

Personally I would use the 256 gig SSD as a OS + program drive. Partition it appropriately based on space required by Programs. and as planned the 512 gig as a storage drive.

The larger the SSD (with in the same family), the faster it is.

Raid0 is not a biggy for Games. Raid0 does provide a boost for working with large Video Files and the 10 thousand jpeg/bitmap photos (LOL) - Reason is that raid0 provides a significant boost to Sequencial performance but does noting for access time (important for 4 K random file performance).

What I did on two systems, both with a pair of 256 Gig SSDs, was to create a 90 gig partition for OS + programs and ten remainder partitioned for most often used files. Not a gamer so my OS + programs are...

Not a gamer so my OS + programs are only approx. 40 gigs. The 2nd ssd was for storage. Back then the 512's were way to expensive.
