Hey,

I'm planning on buying the ASRock Z77E-ITX Mini ITX LGA1155 Motherboard for my new build, and was wondering if I will need a sound card for use with speakers or just the speakers will do.

Thanks

I asked a similar question, and the general response I believe was no, unless you have high quality speakers/headphones to back up the sound card. If you have a good sound card but poor speakers, the overall quality will be poor and vise versa.

So in other words, I need a sound card for sound either way?

These days motherboards have very good onboard chips. To fully utilize your speakers you will not need a sound card. If you have very high quality speakers or headphones, I suggest investing in a sound card to improve overall quality. If you want to make sure you have a good on board sound chip, I suggest looking at some top performing sound cards and compare its SNR (signal to noise ratio) to that of your motherboard's chip. Whatever is higher is better. Just remember that speakers/headphones are usually the limiting factor, not the sound card/chip.

If you think spending premium cash to buy a sound card that is marginally better than the one on your motherboard is worth it, then go ahead. That said, I have an Asus Xonar DX sound card myself.
